Tramdol is the pain killer used to cure moderate to severe pain. it is sold under the brand name ultram. It is an opioid pain killer. It is often combined with paracetmol. It can be taken orally. It starts its action within an hour of intake. It is efficient pain killer.
In U.S, in the year 2013, around 43 million tramadol were prescribed, according to IMS. In the year 1995, U.S food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved tramadol as a non- controlled analgesic. However, after the year it was declared as controlled analgesic. The drug abuse warning network (DAWN) reported that roughly 20000 patients visited in emergency due to tramadol non- medicinal use. This medication is for the age group of 16 to 50 years. It can’t be used by children. In some cases older people are given but in very small dosage and in controlled way.
Tramadol has been placed in schedule IV by U.S. it is now used in controlled substance all over the 50 states of U.S. this was done on July 7, 2014, by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (CDE) under the Controlled Substance Act (CSA) effective from 18th august 2014,. This was done because of overuse, abuse and wrong dosage of tramadol. The law passed is such on the prescription people can take medicines till six months of the date. After 6 months, person needs new prescription. The medicines were also given in controlled manner. This rule is applied to all the medications in schedule III and IV.
Patients of kidney and liver disorders must avoid taking tramadol. Overuse or high dosage of tramadol can cause side effects such as itching, head ache, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, constipation, dizziness, drowsiness, allergic reactions, selling under the skin, orthostatic hypertension, angiodema, etc. it can lead to habit forming. People with a history of drug abuse or addiction are sure to get the habit. Psychological and physical dependence on the medicine increases. It all has some pain one will think that it is because of not taking medicine. People’s psychology changes and get dependent on the medicine. Not only tramadol but all pain killers have adverse effects on the body. One shouldn’t take it for long time or even abuse it or overdose it.
